Welcome to L Derry: Private Half-Day Walking Tour - 3 Hours
Tour Description - Amended to fit
On your private tour, :
1. Guildhall Square
What you’ll see: The striking neo-Gothic Guildhall, stained glass windows telling the city’s story, and views over the Peace Bridge.
Best tip: Pop inside (free entry) to see the exhibition on the Plantation of Ulster and the building’s architecture.
2. The Peace Bridge
Just a 2–3 min walk from the Guildhall.
Cross the river to the Ebrington side for beautiful views back onto the walled city.
Symbolism: Built to connect the once-divided cityside and waterside communities.
Optional 5–10 min detour: continue to Ebrington Square (old barracks turned cultural space), then return over the bridge.
3. Derry City Walls
Enter the walls near Bishop’s Gate or Butcher’s Gate.
These 17th-century walls are completely intact — a rare example in Europe.
Walk the full circuit (about 1 mile): panoramic vantage points over both sides of the city.
Highlights on the walls:
St Columb’s Cathedral – the first purpose-built Protestant cathedral after the Reformation.
Grand Parade – great viewpoint over Bogside murals.
Double Bastion – vantage point facing the river.
4. Craft Village
Slip down into this reconstructed 18th-century style village from the walls.
Cobbled courtyards, artisan shops, local crafts, and independent cafés.
A cosy stop for coffee or a bite to eat.
5. The Diamond
The central square of the walled city.
Has the War Memorial at its heart.
All four main gates of the city radiate from here — the historic street plan still intact.
6. Shipquay Street
Walk downhill from the Diamond along this picturesque street.
One of the city’s most photographed, with sweeping views toward the Guildhall.
Shops, bars and restaurants line the route.
7. Bogside Murals
Exit the walls near Fahan Street or Butcher’s Gate.
Walk to the People’s Gallery murals painted by the Bogside Artists.
Important sites nearby:
Free Derry Corner
Bloody Sunday memorial
A powerful stretch of political and social history.
8. Return Via Waterloo Street
Climb back up toward the walled city through Waterloo Street.
This street is filled with lively traditional pubs, music spots and independent traders.
Great energy in the evenings.
9. Finish at St Columb’s Cathedral or Bishop’s Gate
Depending on your energy level, end with a quiet visit to the Cathedral or loop back toward Bishop’s Gate.
